Government guidance calls on schools to make resources and information on RSE available for parents.
At No Outsiders we have always believed that sharing resources with parents is key; we want parents to know the picture books we use and to have access to the assemblies we publish every week. In this way we can make sure our messages of belonging and inclusion are aligned. We all want the same thing, which is for our children to feel safe and happy in school and beyond.
In 2020 we published a parent guide with a full book list, FAQs and examples of assemblies for schools to make available for parents. The parent guide has now been updated for the new 2024 resource “No Outsiders: we belong here”.
Please explore this page where there are lots of resources. We recommend you ask your school about their No Outsiders ethos.
No Outsiders teaches children they belong in school. We say there are “No Outsiders” here because everyone is welcome; we talk about being different and playing together. There is a No Outsiders resource of 42 picture books with a lesson plan for each book. There are 6 lesson plans / picture books for each year group Reception – Year 6. The picture books are probably books you have seen or already have in your home; Elmer the elephant is in there, so are books by Michael Rosen, Nick Sharratt and Sue Heap.
Many schools also use weekly assemblies that are all published freely on this website. The aim of the assemblies is to show real lifve examples of inclusion around the world.
We are focusing on belonging and we talk about difference as a positive thing, not a negative thing. In the 2020s in the UK we are all different and this work prepares children for life in modern Britain and furthermore for life a global citizens. We want all children to know who they are, feel confident and know they belong in school.
Every child knows what it feels like to be left out and no child wants to be left out. No Outsiders is a powerful message for a four-year old – we play together here, no one is left out, no one is an outsider. Further up the school, we start talking about ways people are different and how we make sure in our school everyone knows they belong. Our language and our behavior has an impact on others.
Andrew will teach a different, age-appropriate lesson using a different picture book in each year group. The lessons are usually for half an hour and will be part of the normal school day. Sometimes schools ask Andrew to deliver a whole school assembly too.
Parents from schools in Birmingham, London, Whitstable, Crewe, Newport and the Isle of Wight discuss the No Outsiders ethos and the impact on their child.
